शिव पुराण में कथा है कि एक बार ब्रह्मा जी और विष्णु जी में बहस हुई कि दोनों में बड़ा कौन है। तभी उनके बीच प्रकाश का एक अनंत स्तंभ प्रकट हुआ, जिसका न आदि दिखता था, न अंत। विष्णु जी उसका नीचे का छोर खोजने गए और ब्रह्मा जी ऊपर का, पर कोई भी उसका अंत न पा सका। तब उसी प्रकाश में से भगवान शिव प्रकट हुए। प्रकाश के उसी रूप को ज्योतिर्लिंग कहते हैं।

The Shiva Purana tells that Brahma ji and Vishnu ji once argued over which of them was greater. Between them appeared an endless pillar of light, with no beginning and no end in sight. Vishnu ji went down to find its foot and Brahma ji went up to find its top, but neither could reach its end. Then Bhagwan Shiv appeared from that light. That form of light is called a Jyotirlinga.

सौराष्ट्र में सोमनाथ, श्रीशैल पर मल्लिकार्जुन, उज्जैन में महाकाल, ओंकार में परमेश्वर, हिमालय पर केदार, डाकिनी में भीमशंकर, वाराणसी में विश्वेश्वर, गौतमी (गोदावरी) के तट पर त्र्यंबक, चिताभूमि में वैद्यनाथ, दारुकावन में नागेश, सेतुबंध पर रामेश्वर और शिवालय में घुश्मेश्वर। जो सुबह उठकर इन बारह नामों का पाठ करता है, वह सब पापों से मुक्त होकर हर सिद्धि पाता है।

Somnath in Saurashtra, Mallikarjuna on Srishail, Mahakal in Ujjain, the Supreme Lord at Omkar, Kedar on the Himalaya, Bhimashankar in Dakini, Vishweshwar in Varanasi, Tryambak on the bank of the Gautami (Godavari), Vaidyanath at Chitabhumi, Nagesh in the Daruka forest, Rameshwar at the bridge, and Ghushmeshwar at Shivalaya. Whoever recites these twelve names on rising in the morning is freed from all sins and gains every blessing.
