The four dhams stand in the four directions of India: Badrinath in the north, Dwarka in the west, Puri in the east and Rameswaram in the south. Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have tied the pilgrimage to these four places into one, so that people would walk around the whole land as one. It is said that seeing all four dhams once in a lifetime purifies the heart.
An old saying goes that Bhagwan Vishnu bathes at Rameswaram, meditates at Badrinath, eats at Puri and rests at Dwarka. That is why the yatra is often made in that order.

Chota Char Dham, the four dhams of the Uttarakhand Himalayas
In the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand there are four more dhams, called the Chota Char Dham: Yamunotri, where the Yamuna begins; Gangotri, where the Ganga does; Kedarnath, where Bhagwan Shiv is a Jyotirlinga; and Badrinath, where Bhagwan Vishnu lives. The yatra goes from west to east, in this order. Because of the snow these temples open only from early summer until around Diwali, and in winter the worship moves down to villages below.
